in paris in 1793, during the regime of the terror established after the july revolution, the wife of a guillotined count tries to recover her husband's clothes because they have become sacred relics for her. she learns from a notorious revolutionary that those clothes were delivered to another woman who had requested them for sentimental reasons. helped by a member of the convention, the countess goes in search of the mysterious girl, who then turns out to be her friend and who conspired with the count to make the queen and her children escape. moreover the girl had declared to be the lover of the executed aristocrat and in this way had saved her own life. the two women subsequently enter the sights of the public salvation committee but, before being arrested, they succeed, with the help of some of the faithful, in embarking for england.
